The rains of tropical storm Laura increased the accumulated water stored in most of the dams of Isla de la Juventud, today to 74.7 percent of their total filling volume.
Yaisel Cobarrubias Bravo, delegate of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources in the special municipality, informed the Cuban News Agency that these artificial reservoirs received 1.9 cubic hectometres of that liquid, thanks to the rainfall that accompanied that event, now a category three hurricane in the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Of the 14 dams that the special municipality has, 10 are 100 percent full, of which four relieve its waters: Briones Montoto, Cristal, Enlace and Vietnam, the engineer also specified.
He stressed that only two of these sources were below the estimate, El Abra -with importance for agricultural use- and La Guanábana, which by infiltration recharges the water table (underground aquifers).
The second Cuban island has a total water storage capacity of 229 million 600 thousand cubic meters to support the demand for organisms, among which agriculture stands out.
This natural resource is served to the entire population of Nueva Gerona through the aqueduct network and the distribution cycle is maintained by tank cars every three days to about two thousand residents in areas far from the capital city, he told the local station .
This sector did not report any damage or damage to its facilities or infrastructure.
