The Municipal Defense Council (CDM) in Isla de la Juventud, headed by its president Zunilda García Garcés, today decreed the extension of the quarantine zone in the Popular Council of July 26, the epicenter of COVID-19 in the territory.
Due to the exponential growth of confirmed positive cases of the contagious disease, the special municipality reports 117 people infected by the SARS CoV-2 virus in the last 15 days and an incidence rate of 140.3 per 100 thousand inhabitants, the fourth highest in Cuba.
According to Israel Velázquez Batista, sector director of Public Health, it was decided to restrict the mobility of the residents of the new blocks in isolation in order to contain the transmission of the virus in about 15 days, an area where the low perception of risk has been a breeding ground for the rapid spread of the disease.
More than two thousand people are currently under epidemiological surveillance by Primary Health Care and consequently the CDM indicated to increase the number of messengers and activists in support of internal order in order to preserve discipline and improve the distribution of food to the families in isolation.
Velázquez Batista pointed out that the territory is currently experiencing the worst scenario, accumulating from November 23 to date 418 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, of which 14 are imported, and in relation to the forecasting model the territory must to reach the number of 460 infected in the next few days.
This reality conditions the urgency to specify the molecular biology laboratory, a modern facility, which - due to political will - is being built in the municipal Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology Center, whose schedule is close to 80 percent of civil execution.
Faced with the critical epidemiological panorama in the second Cuban island and in order to stop the chain of transmission of the new coronavirus, the CDM decreed from March 15 to 30 new containment measures to restrict the mobility of people and vehicles and increase foot passages and points of disinfection in the access areas to this main city.
