Due to its superficial extension, population and economic characteristics, Isla de la Juventud is considered a Special Municipality, therefore it is not attached to any province. It is located in the Gulf of Batabanó and north of the Caribbean Sea, in the western region, at 21 ° 42 ’north latitude and 82 ° 50’ west longitude.
It limits the North with the Gulf of Batabanó, the South and the West with the Caribbean Sea and the East with waters of the insular platform of the province of Matanzas.
The longest river is Las Nuevas, 28 km long, covering 226.1 km² in area with 6 tributaries and flowing in a south-north direction.
The highest elevation is located in Sierra de La Cañada with 303 meters high above sea level.
This is a flat territory, where the Casa, Caballos and La Cañada ranges stand out; and the southern plain. Its hydrography is represented by the Las Nuevas, San Pedro, Las Casas and Júcaro rivers and among the reservoirs the Heroic Viet-Nam. Hydromorphic soils predominate on the coasts, towards the ferralitic center and to the south calcimorphic humic.
