The network of radio amateurs in Isla de la Juventud maintains communications in times of disasters as part of the strategy to supply electricity interruptions due to the winds associated with Delta.
While Delta announces its arrival to Isla de la Juventud with dark clouds and thunderstorms, Orelmis Martínez has been ahead of it for hours by communicating data and the state of the weather in real time to the local government command post.
This young man, a radio amateur with a license to operate since 2007, does not separate from his radio in the management position of the defense zone of the town of La Demajagua, one of the areas with the highest probability of feeling the attacks of Delta, already a category IV hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale from afternoon hours.
«They help to maintain information in times of cyclone, the system has already been activated before and some work from home and others like me, we are located in defense zones, to connect by radio with the local government, the Management Center of Risks of Civil Defense and the FAR.
«We talk about everything that may be useful so that the authorities can make more effective decisions, at this time that Delta threatens the territory, the emergency network is activated with a representative in each popular council and on the radar of Punta del Este, I really like what I do as a hobby, our work is always appreciated, because it is important, "he said.
Jorge Luis Rosabal, Civil Defense official in this Special Municipality, recognized that of all the forms of communication that are implemented for emergencies, radio amateurs are the most effective.
"Through their route they keep the population informed about the orientations of the Civil Defense and the Municipal Defense Council and other decisions such as the moment of evacuation, the distribution of resources and the state of the situation," he said.
For his part, Dagoberto Herrera Roque, president of that Federation in Isla de la Juventud, explained to JR that everyone is ready and in a position to operate without difficulty.
As published on its website, the Federation of Radio Amateurs of Cuba, founded on July 15, 1966, is a Member Society of the IARU (International Union of Radio Amateurs, for its acronym in English), constituted in the country by virtue of the Legal norms that govern the operation of associations are of social interest and its creation pursues the objective of grouping radio amateurs together and facilitating their vocational improvement without profit.
Until the moment of writing this note, sources from the Cuban Institute of Meteorology announced that the most significant accumulations were reported in Isla de la Juventud with 65 millimeters in the Nueva Gerona meteorological station, 54 in La Fe and 50 in Punta del Este, all rated as locally intense.
Another interesting piece of information was provided by Yaisel Cobarruvias, delegate of Hydraulic Resources in the territory when revealing that of the 14 existing artificial reservoirs, 12 discharge their waters and 83.2 percent of the water storage capacity is registered in dams.
The local authorities insist that the population stay informed about the trajectory, evolution and possible effects of Hurricane Delta, not to leave home and comply with the rest of the Civil Defense guidelines in order to safeguard, first of all, human life .
