Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa made a working visit to Pinero territory this Saturday to evaluate the strategy of the agricultural sector, food production and other tasks related to local development and insisted on the urgency of boosting the economy and adjusting to the marketing policy of the country, taking advantage of all the local potential.
The tour included productive areas of the territory, such as the Las Celia organoponic, where he insisted that the best seeds should be used to increase the quality and yields of the crops that contribute to the feeding of the people.
He also visited the livestock module of La Reforma, where he suggested doing projects for the sustainability of the work in order to guarantee quality of breeding, greater management to obtain and process good food and ensure the sustainability of water and the shade that small livestock needs, both here and in other modules of this Special Municipality, called to provide meat of sheep, poultry and rabbit origin to the nearby communities.
Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa stressed that in Isla de la Juventud there is a positive perspective on the food production strategy, but “it is still far from what the territory and the country need, although hard work is being done.
«We have dissatisfaction in relation to Various Crops, the Achilles heel of the territory, since it exhibits results below the averages that are achieved in the country in the Food Sovereignty and Nutrition Education programs, an issue that must be resolved at short term, "he stressed.
After the tour, in statements to the press, Valdés Mesa recognized the slight advance in the midst of the complex socio-economic and political scenario that Cuba is experiencing today, where food production is a priority and for which support for investments, equipment and fuel, but we are still below what we need, he said.
“You have to grow quickly in food production. On the Island there is land, water and arms. It is true that soils are not category I or II, but they are useful: the crops have to be regionalized according to their yields, ”he said.
The objective should not focus only on self-sufficiency, because the double insularity of this municipality also imposes a demand for exchange with other provinces, and must contribute to tourism and exports in order to generate more income so that companies are sustainable, which will result in better wages for workers, producers, cooperatives, he insisted.
«All this is possible. It requires constancy, organization, integration, conciliation; develop economic thinking with efficiency and a lot of work, "said Valdés Mesa, and stressed that the fundamental source for success is savings in all senses: economic, financial, resources, raw materials ... and better use of the power of work to achieve high yields.
In this sense, he recognized among the pine potentialities the advantage of having abundant soil, many underutilized or little exploited.
He pointed to the little use of this resource, the possibilities of crop rotation and the number of reservoirs, which guarantee water for various irrigation systems, including 21 machines for efficient use. Make the most of it, he said.
If necessary, relocate these systems to areas with higher yields, especially to produce food and other staple crops for both humans and herds, he stressed.
Vice President Valdés Mesa called on the pineros to transform the productive reality towards more efficient forms of management, improve the strategy, link more users to idle lands, especially those that have mechanized irrigation, and take advantage of the innovations in agricultural marketing to encourage production, especially in livestock.
